Visit the Arboretum!

Awbury Arboretum, located in Germantown in the Northwest section of Philadelphia, is a 55-acre property that includes walking trails, historic homes and an agricultural village. The property was once the year-round residence of the extended Cope and Haines families, beginning with merchant Thomas Pym Cope in 1849.  The landscape reflects the English Picturesque Landscape style with extensive lawns and meadows, rolling hills, and open vistas framed by groves of trees and shrubs.  It was specifically designed to look “natural” by several prominent landscape architects, including William Saunders.   The property also includes a pond and watercourse area and a walled garden that is now referred to as the Secret Garden. The homes, other than the Francis R. Cope House which is currently used as the Arboretum Headquarters, are privately owned and are not open for viewing.
