Outdoor & Wilderness Leadership Skills (OWLS)

Thursdays, Mar 9-May 4, 2023, 4:30-6:30pm

Graduates of this program will leave with Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification, basic skills in active listening, conflict management, creating a safe emotional environment for children, emergency preparedness, designing a lesson or leading games for children, and basic wilderness skills. In the course of this program, you will create a résumé, find job references, and have several practice job interviews. Upon the successful conclusion of the course, you will be able to apply to be a junior counselor at our summer camp.

Participants: children ages 14-18; 12 students maximum enrollment.

Science in the Wild

Tuesdays, March 7-April 25, 2023, 4:30-5:30pm

Learn ecology, study nature, and find out what a biome is. We will cover topics of pollinators, water cycles, decomposers, trees, seeds, and Pennsylvania wildlife by exploring what Awbury has to offer in its meadows, groves, woods, and watershed. Bring your curiosity and your observation skills. All necessary materials will be provided.

Participants: children ages 10-14; 16 students maximum enrollment.

Natural Wisdom (Off-Grid Living)

Wednesdays, March 15-April 26, 2023, 4:00-5:30pm

Natural Wisdom takes a new spin on homesteading skills. Emphasis will be on learning the off-grid and sustainable techniques to take the place of the technology that we rely every day. This class will teach self-sufficiency, including understanding solar power, preserving food, and crafting tools used in everyday crafts or art making. We will learn how to use nature as our toolbox while respecting it and the gifts it brings us.

Participants: children ages 8-12; 16 students maximum enrollment.

Intro to Wilderness Survival

Tuesdays, March 14-April 25, 2023, 4:00-5:30pm

Learn how to survive in the wilderness: forage edible and medicinal plants, build campfires, learn field first aid, whittle a marshmallow stick and walking stick, build shelters, learn how to find drinkable water, learn useful knots, and how to walk silently through the woods. The last day will be a timed survival relay race. Bring your resourcefulness and your sense of fun.

Participants: children ages 8-12; 16 students maximum enrollment.

Fee: $138 for 6 weeks

Children living in local zip codes who meet the financial requirements are entitled to a scholarship or sliding scale fee. Please get approval from the Education Director before selecting the scholarship rate.
