Intro to Archery & Whittling

Tuesdays, March 12-April 30, 2024, 4:00-5:30pm

Learn basic safety protocols for archery and whittling (carving with a knife). In archery, learn the parts of the bow and arrow, proper stance, grip, and aim. In whittling, learn correct posture and technique, and create a few simple projects. All necessary materials will be provided.

Participants: children ages 8-12; 16 students maximum

Science in the Wild

Tuesdays, March 12-April 30, 2024, 4:30-6:00pm

Approach science from a hands-on perspective, by studying ecosystems, biomes, local Pennsylvania flora and fauna, and water cycles in Awbury’s landscape and farmscape. We will explore Awbury’s many habitats, learning about natural processes like photosynthesis, pollination, and decomposition, collecting data, and make notes and create illustrations of our observations.

Participants: children ages 10-15; 16 students maximum

Intermediate Wilderness Survival

Wednesdays, March 13-May 1, 2024, 4:00-5:30pm

Take the next steps toward wilderness survival: learn more about foraging edible and medicinal plants, build cooking campfires, learn field first aid, whittle a wooden knife, build shelters from natural materials, learn how to find and collect drinkable water, and learn useful knots for keeping your food caches safe from wild animals. Prerequisites: Intro to Wilderness Survival, camping experience, OR Camp Katniss.

Participants: children ages 10-15; 16 students maximum

Natural Wisdom

Wednesdays, March 13-May 1, 2024, 4:00-5:30pm

Are you interested in how we used to live before electricity and the internet? If so, this class on off-grid living is for you! In this class we will make our own paper and rope, make compost, plant seeds, forage for edible and medicinal plants, learn to live in harmony with nature.

Participants: children ages 8-12; 16 students maximum

Art & Nature

Thursdays, March 14-May 2, 2024, 4:00-5:30pm

 

Creative fun projects based as much as possible on natural found and recycled materials. Projects may include drawing, painting, collage, plaster sand casting, paper maché, cardboard construction, baker’s clay, jewelry, and mobiles. We will think of creative ways to use what nature at Awbury has to offer. All necessary materials will be provided (registration fee includes $36 materials fee).

Participants: children ages 10-14; 12 students maximum enrollment.

Outdoor & Wilderness Leadership Skills (OWLS)

Thursdays, March 14-May 2, 2023, 4:30-6:30pm

Get Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification, learn active listening skills, conflict management, how to create a safe emotional environment for children, emergency preparedness, how to lead games, and basic outdoor and wilderness survival skills. Teens will create a résumé, find job references, and have several practice job interviews. They will then be invited to apply for a paid Counselor-in-Training (CIT) position at our summer camps.

Participants: teens ages 13-18; 12 students maximum enrollment.

Fee: $220 for 8 weeks (fee includes Red Cross certification)

Children living in local zip codes who meet the financial requirements are entitled to a scholarship or sliding scale fee. Please get approval from the Education Director before selecting the scholarship rate. If you have already gotten approval in the past 12 months, there is no need to apply again: you are pre-approved for a scholarship.
