About

Wissahickon Charter School’s founders wrote that the school will provide a community of learning with an environmental focus that stimulates the child’s intellectual, social, and character development. WCS has expanded its Awbury programming to include Kindergarten, 1st grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade, as well as monthly service events with middle school students

“WCS kindergartners visit the Arboretum every week for half a day. During this time, students are able to explore the AdventureWoods while engaging in hands-on, self-directed play and learning. School leadership has found that Forest School at Awbury supports students with personal, social, and emotional development, problem-solving, discovery, and inquiry, as well as building knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the natural world around them. None of this
would be possible without Awbury Arboretum. Families of students express such appreciation for this programming and Awbury Arboretum.” – Liz Biagioli, WCS Discovery Teacher

“I think it’s amazing. I had no idea that they [Awbury Arboretum] had all of this back here. I also think that being outside in nature is education for them. My granddaughter talks about how much fun she has. She enjoys the big logs and the tee-pee and she’s not afraid to touch [insects].”
