About the Artist

Laura Madeleine is a fine artist, activist, and teacher. She makes paintings working in an ancient technique called batik which is a form of resist traditionally used for fabric decoration. She paints with molten wax and French dyes in alternating applications on
stretched silk. The wax is removed at the end of the process. Her paintings do not resemble traditional batik.

The artist paints fantastic faces and fills the rest of the picture with wonderful decorations and imaginary landscapes. Inspiration comes from illuminated manuscripts, children’s art, folk art, primitive art, writing forms, shadows, sketches made during the quotidian duties of life, and from traveling the world. Her paintings are unique and utterly entrancing.

She is also the curator and executive director of the activist art project Souls Shot Portrait Project. This project pairs fine artists with family or friends of victims of gun violence. The resulting portraits have been exhibited in various venues in the area, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The goal is to bring attention to the great cost of the epidemic of gun violence in an invitational way by using portraits that illustrate the lives lived by those whose lives were lost or altered due to gun violence. The artwork serves to guide the viewer to a place of empathy and, then, to take action in the quest for peace.
