Locally Sourced, Farm Fresh Produce at Awbury. The Farm is always free and open to walk and explore, but on Sunday afternoons from spring through fall, you can enjoy fresh local foods, buy fresh produce, and shop for artisan goods. In addition, we have Awbury staff and partner organizations on site to answer your questions, plus fun, family-friendly activities, wellness events, workshops, and demonstrations on the first Sunday of every month.

Sunday Fundays are free and family-friendly activities every first Sunday of the month. On August 6, 2023, Sunday Funday will feature Action Karate, a juggler, crafts and activities with The Free Library of Philadelphia and Awbury’s Farm Market.

Can I Eat a Tree? First learn to do some easy tree identification based on the shape, number, and placement of its leaves. Then find out what things trees give us that are good to eat. An apple tree has apples and a cherry tree has cherries, but what can we eat from a pine tree? A sassafras tree? A spicebush? A maple tree? Be ready to taste some recognizable and some new foods.

Forest Bathing

Join us to learn about how forest bathing can help you de-stress and boost health and wellbeing in a natural way. This Japanese practice, known as shinrin yoku in Japan, is a process of relaxation through the simple act of being calm and mindful amongst  trees, observing nature around you whilst breathing deeply.

Butterfly Release

Join us for a butterfly release in Awbury’s AdventureWoods! Monarch Butterflies emerge from their chrysalides in late summer and know they can’t stay long. You can see these amazing insects, discover the beauty found in every stage of their life cycle, help tag them, and then participate in their release to begin their miraculous, 2,000-mile journey to central Mexico!

 

Story Time & Apple Pie

Join us in Awbury Arboretum’s AdventureWoods for storytelling of Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Make You a Pie: A Story About Edna Lewis (by Robbin Gourley), in which the childhood roots of a revered African American chef’s appreciation for the bounties of nature is explored through the seasons.

Our young readers, ages 4-7 can bring an apple variety of their choice so we can learn about different apple types. We will have storytelling time, a fun activity, and an apple pie party!

Children that participate will receive a book and a slice of pie.
