Washington Lane Philadelphia PA 19144 \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT\, BUT ARBORETUM VISITORS ARE WELCOME TO WATCH \nJoin WaterShed Resident Artist Ingrid Raphaël in a sew-and-collage cyanotype workshop using archival images of waterway and creek burials from the late 19th – early 20th centuries\, AND designs created by previous participants. \nThe event will begin with a short introduction of the artist’s research on flooding in Germantown\, and a meditation/ceremony at the only remaining vestige of the Wingohocking Creek\, flowing through Awbury Arboretum \nInformed by Ingrid Raphaël’s storytelling and research for their upcoming film\, weaving together the history of flooding in Philadelphia with Black Memory\, this workshop will provide a space of contemplation\, reclamation\, and collaboration\, and experimentation as twin forces of ecological repair and human intervention. \nJoin us on May 16th for part two of the workshop series\, where we will collage and sew the prints together\, culminating into a piece of collaborative artwork that will be publicly displayed at the WaterShed as part of their Resident Artist Program. \nAbout Ingrid: \nIngrid Raphaël’s art\, films\, teachings & research weave ecology\, technology\, images and landscapes as objects of memory\, temporality & Blackness. Led by an experienced zine artist and educator\, this workshop is designed for teens and adults (ages 13+) and offers a welcoming space to experiment\, connect\, and create. \nWe’ll begin with an introduction to zines as an accessible DIY medium\, using a collection of fungi- and soil-inspired zines to guide discussion. Participants will engage in light movement and a short meditation to spark creative thinking\, followed by open-ended time to begin crafting their own zines using collage\, drawing\, writing\, and more. \nNo prior experience necessary—just bring your curiosity. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Wild Wisdom & Potluck! \nThe Wild Wisdom course is designed to introduce common and underutilized wild edible\, medicinal\, and craft plants of the Philadelphia bio-region\, ancestral homeland of the Lenape/Wingohocking people. Wild Wisdom will teach you to find\, harvest\, prepare\, and cook wild foraged plants! \nThe course is offered as a 4-part 3-hour workshop series covering each season’s bountiful harvest: spring\, summer\, fall\, and winter. \nClasses can be taken as a stand-alone class\, or as a discounted 4-part series with an optional wild-food potluck to follow from 2:30 – 4:30PM! SUMMARY:Many Hands Apothecary Herbal Aid Ed - Classes
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Herbal Aid! \nThe Many Hands Community Apothecary is a cluster of garden beds located in The Farm at Awbury. During the Herbal Aid Ed course\, students will care and support those garden beds over the 9-month course of study. \nThe program covers an introduction to 40+ plants from a range of cross-cultural traditions. These include the cultivated\, wild\, and native medicines of our Philadelphia bio-region on the ancestral indigenous territory of the Lenni Lenape/Wingohoking. Each class includes hands-on time in the Many Hands Community Apothecary garden on site at Awbury Arboretum where we will cover various growing methods\, seasonal medicine processing methods including infusions\, decoctions\, tinctures\, salves\, incense\, powders\, and more! \nThe program hosts ongoing opportunities for wider community engagement during garden volunteer days and medicine making sessions. By the end of the course\, students will walk away with medicines they’ve made\, which include extras for them to share through community distribution days\, and a deep knowledge of the power of plant medicine and aid.
