Exhibition Opening: Recent Works by Andrew Christman (Postponed)

Please note: In an effort to follow the public health recommendations of social distancing in light of coronavirus/COVID-19, we have postponed this event.  We will update this page once we have determined the new date.

Join us for the first art show of 2020 in the Cope House Galleries.

Artist’s Statement:

These mixed-media works on paper explore the tension and play between scientific and intuitive understanding. The improvisational, multi-layered studio practice I employ utilizes photography, printmaking, painting and drawing to synthesize the opposing languages of expressionist image making with the didactic conventions of field guides and text book illustrations.

Drawing upon a diversity of past and present naturalist traditions, my work presents both observational studies of subjects such as plants, animals and trees as well as excavations of my accumulated emotive experiences of them.

About the Artist:

Andrew Christman received a BFA in painting at Pratt Institute Brooklyn. He attended Sotheby’s Institute of Art / Manchester University, UK where he received an MA in East Asian Art History.

Christman is currently a teaching artist for the Philadelphia Museum of Art and a co-founder of Way of Words an interactive poetry and visual art project that utilizes writing and collage experiences to build positive, lasting community connections.
