No registration required. \nLocation: the Cope House\, 1 Awbury Rd\, Philadelphia\, PA \nClick here to learn more about art exhibitions at Awbury Arboretum. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Artist Bios/Statements:\nBetsey Batchelor: Betsey Batchelor is an artist and teacher that lives and works in Philadelphia. She received her MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and her BFA in Painting at The University of the Arts (Philadelphia College of Art). Her work has been shown at the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia\, Dartmouth College\, Swarthmore College\, Arcadia University\, and the Jessica Berwind Gallery\, Jeffrey Fuller Fine Art\, and the Matthews Hamilton Gallery in Philadelphia. She is the recipient of grants from both the Pennsylvania State Council on the Arts and Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. Betsey is a MacDowell Colony Fellow. Batchelor says “The most interesting place to be is between. The state of not knowing\, not naming\, of becoming and not yet being holds a particular energy. I am fascinated with how the small and intimate world of the everyday\, the known and particular\, sit within a larger\, expansive\, and mysterious world that resists knowing through touch or measure. Shape\, with it’s boundaries\, contours and gesture\, offers a metaphor for the limits of our ability to know a world that goes beyond the reach of our senses.” \nIman Jones: Jones says “Simple shapes laid in an unspecific or set pattern that creates an intricate mosaic design that allows you\, the viewer\, to get lost in the details. That’s how I would describe my mosaic paintings. I create them with the hope to give someone a chance to interpret each individual piece differently upon viewing them over multiple times. The paintings are done on a multitude of surfaces\, from paper and canvas\, to wood and glass. I’ve created pieces for walls but also I’ve made pieces to be used as artistic furniture. I encourage you to take the time to get lost in my remixed vision of what mosaics are and can be.” \nJulie Kring: Julie Kring received a B.S. from Kutztown University and an M. Ed. From Penn State University\, both in the field of Art Education with concentrations in Aesthetic Education and Museum Education. As an art educator for over 30 years\, Julie has taught in public and private schools in Coatesville\, Philadelphia\, Camden\, NJ and Seattle WA. Since 2012 she has enjoyed pursuing her own art career in painting and printmaking\, exhibiting her work with The Cheltenham Printmaker’s Guild andThe American Color Print Society\, along with two individual shows in 2017 and this 2020. Her work has received the Printmaker’s Award at the Annual Cheltenham Center of the Arts Members Show in 2013 and 2015 and the Stella Drabkin Award from the American Color Print Society in 2016. Julie is the co-founder of Artful Devotion\, a program offering retreats and workshops for groups interested in discovering ways to enhance their spiritual practice through art making. \nRichard Metz: Richard Metz is a 62-year-old Philadelphia based artist\, husband\, father\, former art teacher\, writer\, and activist with a focus on environmental issues. He has been showing work mostly in the Philadelphia/NY area for forty years. He graduated from Tyler School of Art\, and received an MFA from Maine College of Art in 2000. His artwork since then has included drawing\, printmaking\, painting\, illustrated stories\, sculpture\, indoor and outdoor installations\, performance and theater. Much of the work can be seen on his website: www.mistermetz.com. Metz says “Art making is to me ecologically\, about the process\, about my choices of where to make work\, what to use\, why make it\, and what do I want my work to say….The choice to depict animals and birds in a portrait-like manner is to attempt to decenter humans. What if we aren’t the most important creatures on the planet\, just the most deadly?”

SUMMARY:Women in Birding - A Force Beyond Feathers
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Series with Debbie Beer: “Women in Birding – A Force Beyond Feathers”\nTuesday\, March 22nd\, 7:00-9:00pm \nWomen have connected to birds long before there were binoculars\, smart phones or social media. As culture and communications evolve\, the her-stories of women’s roles in ornithology and birding are emerging with due prominence. In pre-industrial America\, it took special grit for a woman to stand out in any scientific endeavor amid scores of men. It still takes effort\, but the scales are tipping with women birders making a difference as ornithologists\, teachers\, researchers\, writers\, artists\, promoters\, tour operators\, and inspiration for all who love wild birds. From Rosalie Edge—the hellcat of raptor conservation—and Harriet Hemenway—the plume-scorning fashionista—to Graceanna Lewis—a maverick in bird taxonomy—and Rachel Carson\, whose book saved countless endangered species\, women have been influential members of the birding community for millennia. Join us to learn about a few women whose names may be unfamiliar\, but whose impact is indelible as a force beyond feathers. \nPart of 2022: The Year of Birds at Awbury Arboretum \nCost: FREE; but registration required and capped at 30\nRegistration is required and limited to 30 people; please use the form below.  All participants must show proof of vaccination and wear a mask while in the Cope House. \nLocation: The Francis Cope House\, 1 Awbury Road\, Philadelphia 19138\nQuestions?  Please contact Nancy at npasquier@awbury.org. \nFunding for this event has been provided by Spring Point Partners\, PA Humanities\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Debbie Beer:  Debbie Beer has been an avid birder for more than 20 years. She’s traveled to multiple countries and continents for birding\, including Africa\, India\, Brazil and beyond. John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia – a short drive from home in Delaware County\, PA – is Debbie’s favorite local patch\, where she directs the annual “Big Sit” event and leads monthly bird walks. Debbie is fortunate to blend professional and personal interests while working for Natural Lands as Director of Volunteers. In that capacity she manages robust volunteer bird survey\, nestbox monitoring\, and land stewardship programs on Natural Lands properties. Debbie participates in the annual Christmas Bird Count\, Philadelphia Mid-Winter Bird Census and other conservation initiatives. She is an avid eBirder\, fellow of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) and president of the Birding Club of Delaware County (BCDC). Debbie is passionate about sharing nature with others\, supporting conservation\, and advocating access to green space in a diverse\, urban community. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Awbury Arboretum form

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Wild Gardens and the Birds That Love Them
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to the galleries of the Francis Cope House to see \n“Wild Gardens and the Birds That Love Them”\nan exhibition of recent work featuring bird images by Philadelphia artist Julie Zahn. \nThis exhibition will be on display March 2 through April 28\, 2022 (Tues\, Wed\, and Fri 10 AM – 4PM\, or by appointment) with an Opening & Artist’s Reception on Sunday\, March 13th\, 4:00–6:00 PM.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Admission is FREE. No registration require.  Please note: All participants must show proof of COVID vaccination and will be required to wear a mask while in the Cope House. \nLocation: the Cope House\, 1 Awbury Rd\, Philadelphia\, PA \nClick here to learn more about art exhibitions at Awbury Arboretum. \nAbove: Birds preen and pose in the wild gardens depicted in Julie Zahn’s recent work using mixed media\, including woodcut\, Japanese stencil dyeing\, and collage. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nArtist Bio/Statement:\nPainter and printmaker Julie Zahn was raised in Bethesda\, Maryland. Her mother\, artist Ann Zahn\, operated a printmaking workshop in their house where Julie learned to do monoprints and etchings as a teenager. After college\, Julie spent several years in a countryside town in Japan\, where she was hired to teach English but spent her free time painting landscapes and still-lifes. Upon returning to the States\, she enrolled in the 4-year certificate program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After graduating\, she was awarded a travel scholarship to fund a trip to Kyoto where she spent a year working with an antique screen restorer. Toward the end of her stay there\, she discovered katazome or Japanese stencil dyeing\, a paste-resist technique traditionally used for textiles. Attracted by its painterly potential\, she adapted it to paper using acrylics and pigments with gojiru\, a soybean binder\, creating paintings with a printmaking element. She uses katazome\, woodcut\, and painting to create her distinct\, recognizable work. Her studio is in East Mt. Airy just five minutes from Awbury Arboretum\, and she exhibits regularly in Philadelphia and Washington\, DC. \nI have been working to create a natural oasis on my urban spot of land for many years. My surroundings permeate my work and I use images from what I see or imagine might be there. I have also painted landscapes for many years\, working in Maine or Maryland\, always with a view of water. But the garden\, which I walk through to get to my studio\, is my most constant and immediate source of inspiration: the way the pathways meet the rocks\, plants finding their way through the metal gates\, the ever-changing light\, these impressions all feed my visual compositions. \nThere are many artists that I particularly love\, such as Manet\, Matisse\, Diebenkorn\, and Munakata. But paramount has been the influence of a Japanese aesthetic\, perhaps because I learned to draw and paint sitting beside rice fields in the Japanese countryside and on tatami mats in my apartment in Utsunomiya. This influence has permeated my work and I have spent my whole life reinterpreting it in my own way. \nBirds entered my work unexpectedly a few years ago. I needed a wedding gift for my ornithologist brother. With their arresting poses\, their energy and charm\, birds provide everything I want in my work: drama\, design\, beauty. They also gave me a much-needed diversion during Covid and I named this body of work the “Covid Bird Series.”

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Jonathan Eckel's "Blackberry Winter"
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to the galleries of the Francis Cope House to see “Blackberry Winter – select paintings 2014-2020” by Jonathan Eckel. \nThis exhibition will be on display April 20th through June 30th\, with an Opening & Artist’s Reception on June 6th\, 5:00 – 7:00 PM. \nTickets are FREE but limited.  Timed tickets are required; please register using the form below. \nLocation: the Cope House\, 1 Awbury Rd\, Philadelphia\, PA \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Artist: \nJonathan Eckel was born in Glenside\, Pennsylvania in 1980. He received a BFA from Tyler School of Art in 2003 during which time he spent one year studying abroad in Rome\, Italy. Before\, during and after his fine arts studies he traveled extensively in North and Central America\, Eastern and Western Europe\, Asia and Africa; spending one full year living in the Great Rift Valley. In 2010\, he spent three months as an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center which greatly impacted his creative practice and painting style. Most recently\, he spent another three months as an artist in residence at the Ballinglen Arts Foundationlocated on the sea coast of North County Mayo in the Republic of Ireland. Eckel is primarily focused on painting and drawing\, exploring new subject matter and styles\, often blurring the line between abstraction and representation. This constantly inviting and developing approach to art-making allows for experimentation\, reconsideration and action; giving the artist the freedom needed to make an honest mark. The diversity of his imagery is strongly influenced by his world travels along with his deep interests in the history of art\, anthropology\, philosophy and music. Eckel’s work is included in many public and private collections including the permanent collection of the Woodmere Art Museum\, the U.S. State Department Art Bank Program and the Ballinglen Contemporary Museum of Art in County Mayo\, Ireland. The artist currently lives and works at Greene Street Artists Cooperative located in the historic section of Germantown\, Philadelphia. \n. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Artist’s Statement:“Coming out of a long\, long winter\, this exhibition celebrates spring in the arboretum\, where wild berries bloom. After a year of pandemic-induced isolation\, we are thirsting for the sun\, trees\, our loved ones\, and a return to nature. Although the hope of spring is imminent\, the reality of the longest winter’s impact remains.. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Joie de Vivre! I’m in love with the act of painting – the entire process of starting from nothing\, creating\, problem-solving and resolving. These works reflect themes of ritual\, metamorphosis\, vernal phenomenon and personal mythology. Walking the line between figuration and abstraction. I’m trying to tap into the vital force. The impulse of life. \nSurvival requires adaptation. Like the berry blossom breaking through early-spring snowfall\, we persevere. I choose to emulate this model in my studio practice and daily life.” \n. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAwbury Arboretum form
