George has authored two books on birds including Better Birding: Tips\, Tools\, and Concepts for the Field (2015\, Princeton University Press) and The ABA Field Guide to the Birds of Pennsylvania (2016\, Scott & Nix\, Inc.). He received a masters degree in environmental studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, and is an associate at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia\, and co-hosts Lifelist: A Birding Podcast. He has cultivated and donated thousands of pounds of produce to the City Harvest program and given countless volunteer hours to many other gardens\, green spaces\, and green organizations across the city. \nConnie Ragsdale\nConnie brings the same level of commitment and service to our shared historic and cultural resources. She is the recipient of grants from both the Pennsylvania State Council on the Arts and Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. Betsey is a MacDowell Colony Fellow. Batchelor says “The most interesting place to be is between. The state of not knowing\, not naming\, of becoming and not yet being holds a particular energy. I am fascinated with how the small and intimate world of the everyday\, the known and particular\, sit within a larger\, expansive\, and mysterious world that resists knowing through touch or measure. Shape\, with it’s boundaries\, contours and gesture\, offers a metaphor for the limits of our ability to know a world that goes beyond the reach of our senses.” \nIman Jones: Jones says “Simple shapes laid in an unspecific or set pattern that creates an intricate mosaic design that allows you\, the viewer\, to get lost in the details. In that capacity she manages robust volunteer bird survey\, nestbox monitoring\, and land stewardship programs on Natural Lands properties. Her mother\, artist Ann Zahn\, operated a printmaking workshop in their house where Julie learned to do monoprints and etchings as a teenager. After college\, Julie spent several years in a countryside town in Japan\, where she was hired to teach English but spent her free time painting landscapes and still-lifes. Upon returning to the States\, she enrolled in the 4-year certificate program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After graduating\, she was awarded a travel scholarship to fund a trip to Kyoto where she spent a year working with an antique screen restorer. Toward the end of her stay there\, she discovered katazome or Japanese stencil dyeing\, a paste-resist technique traditionally used for textiles. Attracted by its painterly potential\, she adapted it to paper using acrylics and pigments with gojiru\, a soybean binder\, creating paintings with a printmaking element. She uses katazome\, woodcut\, and painting to create her distinct\, recognizable work. Her studio is in East Mt. Airy just five minutes from Awbury Arboretum\, and she exhibits regularly in Philadelphia and Washington\, DC. \nI have been working to create a natural oasis on my urban spot of land for many years. My surroundings permeate my work and I use images from what I see or imagine might be there. I have also painted landscapes for many years\, working in Maine or Maryland\, always with a view of water. But the garden\, which I walk through to get to my studio\, is my most constant and immediate source of inspiration: the way the pathways meet the rocks\, plants finding their way through the metal gates\, the ever-changing light\, these impressions all feed my visual compositions. \nThere are many artists that I particularly love\, such as Manet\, Matisse\, Diebenkorn\, and Munakata. But paramount has been the influence of a Japanese aesthetic\, perhaps because I learned to draw and paint sitting beside rice fields in the Japanese countryside and on tatami mats in my apartment in Utsunomiya. This influence has permeated my work and I have spent my whole life reinterpreting it in my own way. \nBirds entered my work unexpectedly a few years ago. I needed a wedding gift for my ornithologist brother. With their arresting poses\, their energy and charm\, birds provide everything I want in my work: drama\, design\, beauty. She teaches in a professional studio and has taught in various schools/recreational centers within the School District of Philadelphia. Join us for this free workshop!\nPart of Sunday Fun Days at The Farm \nPhiladelphia Guild of Handweavers member Sheryl Kessler will be teaching a free workshop at Awbury Arboretum starting promptly at 1 pm and ending at 4 pm. \nYou can bring your own supplies or purchase a kit from Sheryl for $25. The kit contents are below. If you bring your own supplies\, they should be the same items as are in the kit although your own needle should be a #20 or #22 sharp (not rounded point) and a needle with a smaller eye (the smallest eye to fit your thread is the easiest to use). Any small scissors will do. \nContents of Getting Started with Fabric Collage kit: 2 embroidery needles: 1 Bohin #20 or #22 & 1 Clover Gold eye needle; 10 straight pins; and 1 Snips; Kit contains the following wound onto a card (you may bring a spool of thread and floss); Length of matching sewing thread; 3 Matching colors of 6-strand floss; 1 Matching color of perle embroidery thread; Backing fabric (5 x 5 inches); Batting (5 x 5 inches) curated Fabric Scraps.
