Pests in the garden

How much water is there? Of all the water on the earth, only about one percent is fresh and available for people to use in agriculture, recreation, transportation, manufacturing and throughout our homes. Reduce waste by using water more efficiently around your home and garden.

  • Collect rainwater in barrels to water your garden

  • Mulch garden beds and around trees to conserve soil moisture around roots

  • Water your garden in the morning before the water evaporates in the heat of the day

How clean is it? Rain and melting snow wash over our gardens, lawns, and driveways picking up dirt, trash, oil and anything else on the ground. This polluted water travels over land and through storm drains into local creeks and the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers. Keeping our properties clean will help reduce pollution entering our waterways.

  • Avoid using chemical fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides as much as possible. Water washing off your lawn and garden will have fewer pollutants

  • Clean up litter you find on the ground. In the next storm, it could wind up in a creek or river

  • Service your car regularly to prevent and treat oil / fluid leaks
