Fall Beekeeping Course

6 Wednesdays, November 6th – December 18th (no class the week of Thanksgiving)

Fall is a great time to discover the back story behind the craft of beekeeping. Before you buy equipment or bees, knowing the most important considerations in making the best choices for your unique situation is valuable. Our beginners beekeeping class will prepare you for becoming a backyard/urban beekeeper. Our approach at Green Sanctuary Community Apiary at Awbury Arboretum leans toward natural & low chemical with an emphasis on what is good for maintaining local populations of honey bees.

We can direct you to choices in all varieties of wooden ware & hive styles as well as options for obtaining bees when you are ready to start off on your own. Let friends and family know of your interest in beekeeping! You may find a hive tool among your winter holiday gifts.

We will meet 6 consecutive Wedsnesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:15 pm in the front parlors of Francis Cope House. No protective gear is needed for this class. An optional spring demo with live bees will take place in Spring 2014, TBD, when bees are ready to be hived and/or split in nucleus colonies for purchase.

Taking our beginner beekeeping course is a prerequisite for becoming an apiary Hive Steward at either
Green Sanctuary Community Apiary and/or the newly forming apiary at Saul High School.
