Composting

Pests in the garden

Wildlife habitat

What is composting? This is a natural process that breaks down organic material into soil.

Why should people compost their waste? Composting helps your garden and the environment by:

  • turning waste into free fertilizer

  • recycling important nutrients back into the soil
  • reducing the amount of trash collected, saving limited landfill space

What can I compost? "Green" materials such as grass clippings, flowers, leaves, vegetable and fruit scraps (including rinds). "Brown" materials including dried leaves, wood chips, twigs, straw, and old potting soil. Add enough water to keep the pile moist. Add air by turning and poking the pile periodically.

"Green" material generates the heat necessary to make compost quickly. Mixing in "brown" material helps eliminate odors.

Avoid the following materials:

  • diseased or insect-infested plants

  • weeds that have gone to seed (may produce new plants where the compost is spread)
  • dog or cat droppings (may carry disease)
  • meat, fish, oily foods, and milk products (these attract unwanted animals)
